Play Pericles or Peter on a Pangea. That will give you a good baseline of how to handle higher difficulties with an easier road to victory. Also if you want an early war at emperor or higher, I would recommend focusing tech solely on your early war conquests. Watch PotatoMcWhiskey is honestly the best advice.

But it also depends on preffered victory: domination: Terra. science: pangea / 7seas. diplo: definitely lakes/inland sea in favor of lakes.
