Treece, Kansas, is a total ghost town. Founded in 1917 around a mining operation, the town served as a major supplier of lead, zinc, and iron ore for decades.Coal mining in Kansas peaked between 1917 and 1918. Bituminous coal deposits were widely distributed in eastern Kansas. Deep mining and surface mining methods were used in at least 20 coal beds but the bulk of the mines were in southeastern Kansas in the counties of Cherokee, Crawford, and Bourbon. The first settlers were attracted to the area due to the abundance of salt. Salt was a commodity used primarily in the preservation of meat. Greater quantities of salt could be obtained by boiling away the water in vats. Once J. Sterling Morton developed his salt mines in Kansas, salt in the village was no longer a viable commodity.
