I picked up a low mile N/A 617 that I want to put in a 91' reg cab-short bed 4x4 Toyota pickup. I know that I can make the adapters to bolt it to the Toyota w-56 5spd, my question is how reliable of a power plant would this be for a little truck. I am not really going for power, but more for economy and it being somewhat unique.Shortly after posting the results on YouTube or Facebook, I received a message saying the performance should have been higher. The Iron 5 is hard to beat in durability and is proven to be capable of 300 - 500k miles. :thumbsup: The newer 606 is better in performance and requires less maintenance (no need to adjust valves). An increase in mpg is a plus but I am more interested in the torque that a diesel can supply at lower revolutions. 20mpg eh? <snicker> Justin has said that about the OM617 in that 40, but I don't know what he's basing that on. Theres a fine comprimise between being unique, and just throwing money away, this swap would be teetering that line hard. If all you want is fuel economy, swap in a 2.3L with a 5sp and some high gears, youll get more MPG then the diesel and be a helluva lot cheaper and eaiser. If you want power a V8 is your best option.
